William was appointed president in 2008, and he has a background in both underwriting and broking. In 1996 he joined Octavian Syndicate Management and helped establish a new syndicate. Following Markel’s acquisition of the Terra Nova Group in 2000, he played a leading role in shaping and developing Markel International.

Jeremy was appointed to his current position in 2008, and has been an underwriter in the London market since 1989. He is responsible for the strategic management of Markel International’s underwriting divisions and also has responsibility for its reinsurance-buying strategy.

Andy Davies

Andy was appointed chief operating officer of Markel International in January 2015 having previously been finance director of Markel International since 2000. Andy is responsible for the overall operating performance of Markel International. Following the significant growth at Markel International in recent years the majority of Andy’s time is spent working with the support functions and the underwriting operations in the UK and overseas ensuring that they successfully grow through organic growth and acquisitions. Andy joined the Terra Nova Group in 1994 as group financial controller, moving from Coopers & Lybrand where he specialised in the insurance and financial services sector

Nick was appointed chief actuary in 2003. He has worked as an actuary in the London Market since 1997, when he joined the Terra Nova Group, which was acquired by Markel in 2000. At Markel International he has built an actuarial team with responsibility for reserving, pricing and capital modelling. Nick also oversees the teams responsible for catastrophe management and information management.

Jeremy Noble

Jeremy was appointed finance director in 2015 having transferred from Markel Corporation’s U.S. headquarters. He joined Markel in 2002 and has served in various roles in the accounting and finance department. He had been in his previous role as managing director of internal audit at Markel Corporation since 2011. He is responsible for all the financial reporting at Markel International. Prior to joining Markel, Jeremy worked for KPMG where he specialised in the insurance industry.

Simon Wilson

Simon Wilson

Director of National Markets

Simon joined Markel International in 2010 as director of international development and was appointed director of national markets in 2015.  He is responsible for Markel’s operations across Europe and Canada. Simon joined Markel from Lloyd’s of London where he was managing director of Lloyd’s Asia, based in Singapore. Simon is an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and is a member of several London market committees, including the Lloyd’s market development steering group, and the LMA strategy committee.

Paul Jenks

Managing Director - Marine and Energy

Paul joined Markel International in 2001 and was promoted to the board in 2011. Paul has 30 years' experience as an insurance underwriter in the Lloyd’s marine market, and he has been instrumental in growing Markel's marine and energy business. Paul has served on a number of London Market committees, including the Joint Hull Committee, Salvage Association and Lloyd’s register of Shipping.

 Hannah Purves

Hannah joined Markel International in January 2013 as claims director, heading up the claims team which spans the UK, European, and Canadian offices. Prior to joining Markel she was head of political risk, terrorism and contingency claims at Beazley and before that was a solicitor in private practice at Mayer Brown, focused on insurance and reinsurance business.

Hugh Maltby

Hugh has over 27 years’ operational experience in the insurance industry joining Markel International from Brit Insurance in 2009 as director of operations. At Markel he has built a team responsible for all aspects of day to day operational activity.  

Ian Marshall

Ian is a chartered accountant who has worked in retail banking and insurance for over 35 years.  He joined Markel International as chief operating officer in 2002 and then became a non-executive director and later chairman. Aside from Markel, Ian is a senior advisor to the Prudential Regulation Authority and honorary treasurer of Barnardos.

Ralph Snedden

Ralph has more than 30 years' international experience in general insurance. He spent over six years with the Euler Group, where his positions included chairman of the business development group at Euler Hermes and chief executive of Euler Hermes International. Ralph set up his own consultancy firm, Eurinsure, in 2004.

Anne Whitaker

Anne was appointed non-executive director in November 2013. Prior to joining Markel, she worked for EY for nearly 30 years, latterly as Audit Partner – Investment Management. Anne left the firm in 2008 to take up a number of voluntary, public sector and private sector roles with organisations including the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, an NED of Barts Health NHS Trust, and YourStory, a Lambeth charity for local young people.

John Spencer

John Spencer has more than 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry. He was chief executive of Lloyd’s insurance and reinsurance broker BMS Group between 1997 and 2008 and, prior to that, was head of Lloyd’s development & operations, the Americas, from 1995. He is currently non-executive chairman of Argo Managing Agency Ltd, a non-executive director of Newline Underwriting Management Ltd, and Newline Insurance Company Ltd, and a non-executive director of Thompson Heath & Bond Ltd. He also chairs the management board of the Lloyd’s community programme.
