Graduate Trainee 2019
Tell me about your current graduate rotation?
I am currently working within the Marine and Energy Liability team; my first rotation of the 18 month graduate programme.
Typically, my work varies from supporting the Underwriters with new evolving risks that appear at the box, to attending various market events in order to broaden my understanding of the wider industry. The Markel graduate programme gives you great exposure to the Lloyd’s Market, enabling you to deepen your knowledge of the insurance industry right from day one.
What do you enjoy most about your current rotation?
My favourite part about my role is experiencing the abundance of diverse risks that arise at the box on a daily basis, whilst also getting the opportunity to meet the array of interesting people that work across the London Market. Both the summer internship and graduate programme have also given me invaluable exposure to senior management, and most importantly supported me in adding value to both my team and wider organisation wherever possible.
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
When starting out in the Lloyd’s Market, the vast range of new terminology can often seem perplexing. Retaining all this information whilst also juggling your day job and professional qualifications has got to be my greatest challenge, however I’ve found that efficient planning ultimately enables one to manage the workload, and allows time for you to enjoy yourself after work too.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the graduate programme at Markel International?
Don’t hesitate to apply.
The London Insurance Market really is the ‘hidden gem’ of the financial industry and the opportunities offered at Markel really do provide one with invaluable exposure to this illusive market. Although it may sound cliché, I would stress the importance of being you throughout the application process. Insurance is fundamentally a peoples industry, and personal qualities really do count for a lot.
Describe your Markel experience in 3 words
Challenging but rewarding.
